US Online Personality Penalized After Mass E-Bike Ride on Sydney Harbour Bridge

New South Wales authorities have issued a fine against an US-based online influencer and served two traffic infringement notices for reported negligent driving following a large group of electric bicycle users gathered on the Sydney Harbour Bridge during the busy commute on a weekday.

The Incident: A Prohibited Ride

A group of approximately 40 individuals riding e-bikes and motorcycles travelled along the primary roadway of the bridge, an area where bicycle riding is banned. The riders subsequently reversed direction and traveled through the city’s CBD and Haymarket.

"There was potential for serious injury or fatalities," remarked a senior police official David Driver on the following day.

Police indicated they did not chase right away the group out of concerns for public safety but instead located the assembly at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair near the Botanic Gardens, where they dispersed.

Fines Imposed for Content Creator

Later in the week, police announced they had issued the US social media influencer who goes by Sur Ronster, 26, with two violation tickets for careless operation (not involving death or prior injury), carrying a fine of over five hundred dollars and penalty points each, in relation to the bridge incident. They added that the investigation is ongoing.

The influencer is said to have over 3.4 million subscribers on YouTube and over 1.2 million on Instagram.

Influencer's Comments

The content creator gave comments to a major newspaper recently after the incident gained traction on news sites and social media, saying he regretted giving "bike life" a negative image.

"I’ll probably take responsibility. It was one of the safest ride-outs I have witnessed," he told the publication. "I’m coming here as a guest, and I intend to come here respecting the laws and norms of the city. When I decided to do a public meeting it was not meant to include a group ride, it was just to say hi near the bridge."

"I did not know the area well, I am to blame we found ourselves on the bridge and I had two choices: whether the group completes the entirety of the bridge and comes back, which is a crime. Or we reverse, basically, before we’re on the bridge. I chose at the time to turn around."

Broader Context on E-Bike Regulation

The spate of electric bicycles on streets across the country has prompted increasing demands for stricter rules. A senior government official, Mark Butler, recently said that illegal ebikes were a "total menace on the road."

"Young people have engaged in reckless acts on bikes ever since the penny-farthing [but] the injuries that are coming into our ERs are truly severe," the minister stated. "We must ensure we stop these things entering the country [and] police are given the authority to take strong action, to take them away, to destroy them, to destroy them."

The state reported over two hundred injuries related to ebikes in the previous year. However, in the first seven months of 2025, that number surged to two hundred thirty-three injuries plus four deaths.
