Larian Studios Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The speculation around The Game Awards was significant, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team is likely building a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it kicked off the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, branching plots, and complex character building—elements that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs you can achieve if you're playing as a distinct build with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously flexible, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be completed in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is these creative systems that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
