At least thirteen people perish and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.
A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” declared the national leader.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its role in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
