Astronaut Discloses Emotional Distress In the Wake of Deluge of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also carried well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a social media post, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the period after the flight.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the tide of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
A Path to Recovery
In the time since achieving her goal, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose kindness were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.
She added that despite the negativity, considerable good had resulted from the experience, such as increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The fully automated spacecraft launched from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that passed the edge of outer space.
